my mom came home a minnesotan, again!

5.28.2008

Mom just returned from a trip to Minnesota and Missouri - she visited her sister In Pipestone and my sister in Missouri!  She came home full of stories and a happiness about her that was refreshing to see.  She has worked very hard at getting well - so this trip was a true test of how far she has come since December.  She and Lucille trekked into the past - went to their old school in Verdi - visited people and did lots of talking, catching up!  They visited Aunt Ramona graveside and spoke of her memories and how she touched not only them but everyone she knew.  Mom planted a beautiful geranium for her and went back to find it eaten off - my guess the deer enjoyed the gift..and aunt Ramona was smiling though it all.  The nieces and nephews visited and shared their current stories.  All of those tickled mom and have given her new stories to tell now.  There is something to be said about submerging yourself in the heartland, the farmlands of America where you grew up.  They drove up to the old farm were they were born and found it closed up and being refurbished.  What a sight that must be.  That white star on that big ole barn that could be seen for miles is a sight forever emblazoned in all of our hearts that have been there and seen it.  Mom talks with that little accent that happens to you when you spend anytime in Minnesota - she looked at crops in the fields and flowers blooming and has had much report about the way things are.  her happiest picture memory was seeing uncle chuck on his tractor out in the field - doing what he loves best and not letting age set his limits.  Her trip down memory lane rejuvenated her and has brought a smile to her face that will not soon go away - for that i am so thankful.  She found life with Pam and Phil so good - Pam's happy teaching at the local college along with keeping two churches going.  Phil is busy being the lawn man for many different people and so happy at it.  So for two weeks mom went and submerged herself in the land she loves and always has.  She was surrounded by people who love her and she Loves them in return - it was More than a vacation - it was a return to her roots... the place she started to become the wonderful mom that she is...  you can take carol out of the country but you cannot take the country out of carol - and the past two weeks proved it....  the road to memory lane was shared with her sister and i would have given anything to be a fly on the wall as they laughed and chatted endlessly about the wonderful lives they both have!
